It really depends on what you're into. Mario 64 controls slightly awkwardly on the ds, but was still an amazing game. On the other hand, if you've never played it, New super mario bros. is a lot more like the Mario game from SNES. Mario 64 will last WAY longer. There are a lot more things to 'figure out' and discover in that one as well. The New Super Mario bros. is more cut and dry. Its a 2 dimmensional platformer with only 1 real objective ----> Go to the right.
If you're a more experienced gamer, looking for something thats going to last you for a while, get Mario 64-DS.
If you're more of a casual gamer, looking for something thats really easy to pick up and put down, that might not last as long, go for New Super Mario Bros DS.
If you are buying this for a family member and don't know a lot about video games, I would probably go with New super Mario Bros as well, because its not really an acquired taste, but more like something everyone can enjoy.
You could also look into purchasing these used from your local game stop because on a used purchase you have 7 days to return it for any reason you want. Didn't like the game? No problem. (I actually hate gamestop, but this is one time when they'd come in handy).
